Our Response to the Request for an Improved Search Engine

Many respondents commented on the need for improved searching capabilities. The current search engine we are using to deliver the Web pages is inflexible and difficult to modify. The Electronic Journals Group is working on a new web page with improved search capabilities and will be gathering feedback from students, faculty and librarians when a draft is finished.

Here are a few insights into using our current search engine:

  • When the Single Keyword searching option is selected, only the first keyword is used. All other entered words are ignored.

  • The Phrase Search allows searching for a complete title. (Please note that from comments received from the survey a bug in the existing web-interface was detected and is now fixed.) The sequence of words in the phrase are taken as a unit and an exact string match anywhere in the database constitutes a hit. The match need not occur, only at the start of the title
