Task Group on Library Collections Space

Final Report

June 11, 1992

Executive Summary

The Task Group on Dana Porter Library Collections Space makes the following recommendations to address the Library's long term and short term space needs.

  1. In the long term, the Task Group recommends that the University of Waterloo erect a high density storage building in cooperation with other interested universities, most notably Wilfrid Laurier University and the University of Guelph. This is the least expensive option for providing sufficient shelf space to carry the Library into the next century. In the event that another university or other universities are unwilling to enter into a cooperative venture with the University of Waterloo, this University should construct such a facility itself.

  2. In the short term, the Task Group recommends that the Acquisitions and Cataloguing Departments be relocated to another building on or adjacent to campus and that the Reserve Reading Service be centrally relocated within the Ring Road. The immediate implementation of this recommendation should provide sufficient time to implement the first recommendation.

  3. The Library should adopt practices that reduce its burden over the long term, although they will not produce significant gains in available space over the next decade. These practices include rewriting approval plan profiles and conversion of the collection to microform and electronic media, where feasible.
