Library Update - Spring 2005
University
- Amit Chakma, who became Vice-President Academic & Provost in August 2001, has been reappointed for a second term.
- Mike Lazaridis, founder, president and co-chief executive officer of Research In Motion Ltd. (RIM), has been re-appointed UW’s Chancellor.
- “Campaign Waterloo” continues. Recently, Ophelia and Mike Lazaridis gave the University $17.2 million, on top of last year's $33.3 million gift for the Institute for Quantum Computing.
Library
- Howard Burton, Executive Director of Perimeter Institute, will deliver this year’s Friends of the Library Lecture on May 17th. His talk is entitled “Creativity Unbound… pushing the perimeter.”
- All faculties and departments are engaged in preparing reports for the Senate Long Range Planning Committee as part of a campus-wide “6th Decade Planning” process. The Library submitted its report in late April.
- Economical Life Insurance Group has donated $150,000 to the Library in recognition of Peter Sims. Peter recently retired as chair of the board of Economical, is a member of the Library’s campaign team and was former chair of UW's board of governors. The funds will be used to refurbish the quiet study area in the recently renovated Davis Centre Library.
- The Library’s website is being redesigned in conjunction with work underway to change the look and feel of the University’s websites.

- Sharon Lamont, formerly the Head of the Library's Circulation Services Department, has been appointed as the Director, Organizational Services. http://www.lib.uwaterloo.ca/newsatlib/050224/organization.html
- Jennifer Haas, from the University of Texas, will join the UW Library in August 2005 as Head of the Davis Information Services and Resources Department.
