Library Update - Spring 2006 (revised)
University
- "The Waterloo Way" Prompts Globe & Mail Article - A recent Globe & Mail article (April 25) focused on the successful economic growth in the Waterloo region, despite the gradual decline in its manufacturing sector. Providing a statement from University President, David Johnston, the article acknowledges UW's role in the region's success, making it a model for the economic growth of other Canadian communities.
- School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences Campus - Tuesday, March 14, 2006 marked the official groundbreaking for Waterloo’s School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences Campus located in downtown Kitchener. Included in the development will be a satellite campus for McMaster University’s Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine and a new branch library for UW. The new School of Pharmacy program is scheduled to commence in September 2007.
- Leadership Changes
- David Fransen will serve in the new post for Associate Vice-President (Strategic Relations) and Executive Director for the Institute for Quantum Computing. Fransen was seconded from his position as Assistant Deputy Minster for Industry Canada.
- Alan George has a one-year interim appointment as Vice-President of University Research. George is also the Associate Provost for Information Systems and Technology.
- James Pankratz is the new Dean for Conrad Grebel University College.
- Deep Saini is the new Dean for the Faculty of Environmental Studies.
Library
- Kresge Challenge – The Kresge Challenge campaign is fully underway. The collective response from library staff was tremendous with 92% of 129 members contributing to the Challenge. A flash media presentation was created for Challenge and distributed by email to targeted segments of the UW community to help raise the profile of the Library and broaden its base of support.
- RFID Installation – Staff are in the midst of implementing a new RFID inventory and security system. It is scheduled to be fully operational in the Davis Centre Library by September 2006. The Dana Porter Library is scheduled to be up and running by spring 2007.
- Assessment of Services – Results are being analyzed from the Library Satisfaction Survey conducted between January and February 2006. This general survey assesses patron satisfaction with our library services, resources, and facilities. Other recent library surveys that now have reports include:
- Friends of the Library – Adel Sedra, Dean of Engineering, will deliver this year’s Friends of the Library Lecture on Wednesday, May 24.
