- Friends of the Library Event Featuring the Hon. John Manley, P.C. – Over 500 people attended this year’s Friends of the Library Authors Event on April 1st. This year’s event featured a keynote talk by the Hon. John Manley, P.C. entitled “Afghanistan: Is there an answer?” In addition to Mr. Manley’s talk, the event recognized 30 individuals from the UW community who authored a book or other creative works during the past year.
- Academic Integrity Project – In light of UW’s Academic Integrity Committee’s report Enhancing Academic Integrity at the University of Waterloo, two of UW’s librarians, Christine Jewell and Leeanne Romane, are developing an online module to teach academic integrity to incoming students this fall.
- Staff Presentation – On April 16 University Librarian, Mark Haslett, gave a presentation to all library staff that celebrated the Library’s recent successes and outlined its future directions. With the theme of “grow,” as reflected in the Library’s new poster and bookmark campaign, Mark highlighted the Library’s three key areas for future growth as 1) student experience, 2) space, and 3) e-initiatives.
- E-Initiatives–
- Verde Implementation – The UW Library successfully implemented a new electronic management system this fall in collaboration with its Tri-University Group (TUG) partners, Wilfrid Laurier University and the University of Guelph.
- Primo Implemention – Also in collaboration with its TUG partners, the Library is currently in the process of implementing Primo, a new search and discovery tool.
- Ares e-Reserves Software – The Library recently purchased the e-reserves software, Ares, planning for deployment in fall 2008.
University
- UW-Stratford Campus – UW and the City of Stratford recently celebrated their milestone efforts to develop a UW campus specializing in digital media and global business in Stratford after securing pledges from the City of Stratford, the Province of Ontario, and corporate leader, Open Text.
- Balsillie School of International Affairs – The Balsillie School of International Affairs continues to grow and has recently appointed professor and best-selling author Thomas Homer-Dixon to a post commencing this summer. The Balsillie School of International Affairs is joint initiative between the University of Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier University, and the Centre for International Governance. Plans for the School were first announced in June 2007 after a $50 million gift from Research In Motion’s Co-CEO, Jim Balsillie.
- UW Identity Review Project – UW’s new vice-president of external relations, Meg Beckel, has initiated a UW identity review project to rebrand UW’s public identity. The intention of the project is to create a consistent identity that is supported by messages highlighting UW’s distinguished traits and attributes.
- Bill Gates Visits UW – Bill Gates visited UW on February 21, giving a talk to a full audience in UW’s Humanities theatre. Gates’ visit coincided with his recent gift to UW’s Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing (CEMC). The gift was donated from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and will assist CEMC to expand its youth outreach program in mathematics and computer science.
