Library Update - Fall 2006
University
- Trudeau Book Launch — On Thursday, November 2, the Library, UW BookStore and Faculty of Arts co-hosted a book launch for Professor John English's new book, Citizen of the World: The Life of Pierre Elliott Trudeau, Volume One: 1919-1968. Professor English is Chair of the Library Campaign's Volunteer Team and the executive director for the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI), a multidisciplinary organization dedicated to creating solutions for a wide scope of governance issues.
- Stephen Lewis Visits UW — As a part of UW's homecoming events, Canada's former UN ambassador, Stephen Lewis, provided a keynote lecture to a full-house of UW faculty, staff, students, and alumni on Saturday, September 30th. Lewis, United Nations envoy on HIV/AIDS in Africa discussed the impact of global issues and the role of education and human rights.
- 20 Goals for 2010 — On Thursday, September 21, UW President, David Johnston, challenged local community members and leaders to join him in the pursuit to make the Waterloo region "the knowledge capital of Canada" by 2010. In a speech to the Chamber of Commerce, Johnston provided 10 goals for becoming a "knowledge capital" based on "talent, technology, and tolerance." He invited the community to "dream together" and help develop 10 additional goals to take Waterloo past 2010.
- QuantumWorks Launched — Funded by NSERC, QuantumWorks national research network was officially launched on September 27 from its headquarters at UW's Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC). QuantumWorks is directed by UW's Raymond Laflamme and designed to link Canadian researchers with expert information in the fields of quantum algorithms, cryptography, and information processing devices.
- Accelerator Centre Opens — Located in the UW Research + Technology Park, the Accelerator Centre officially opened on May 18, 2006. The Accelerator Centre provides office space and access to industry experts for new high-tech firms. The not-for-profit Centre is the result of a multi-stakeholder partnership between the federal and provincial governments, plus the University of Waterloo, University of Guelph, Wilfrid Laurier University, and Conestoga College.
Library
- Library Welcomes New AUL — Allan Bell is the Library's new Associate University Librarian, Information Technology Services. Allan's previous work includes serving as Technical Manager with HighWire Press in the Stanford University Libraries; Manager of Design & Development with Ovid Technologies; Systems Librarian for the University of Texas at Arlington, University Libraries; and a Computer Services/Reference Librarian in the Humanities and Social Sciences Library at McGill University. Allan will officially join the UW Library in January 2007.
- RFID Installation Update — On May 24, the Library officially announced its $1 million gift-in-kind involving 3M Canada's One-Tag RFID Inventory and Security System. The tagging process at the Davis Centre Library is complete and the security system is now live. RFID tagging is currently underway at the Dana Porter Library and is expected to be finished by early 2007.
- Kresge Challenge — The Library is less than $1 million away from meeting the Kresge Challenge's $2.8 million goal. The Parents in Partnership fundraising program was particularly successful — over $300,000 in parent contributions were designated to the Challenge.
- Murray C. Shepherd Learning Lab — On Tuesday, November 14, former University Librarian, Murray Shepherd, unveiled the commemorative plaque naming the learning lab located on the fourth floor of the Dana Porter Library in his honour. Prior to his retirement in 2003, Shepherd played a key role in attracting funding from the Harold Crabtree Foundation to transform the former meeting room into a learning lab with modular furnishings, state-of-the-art equipment, and the necessary infrastructure to allow for wired and wireless capabilities.
- Musagetes Architecture Library — Wednesday, November 1 marked the official opening of the Musagetes Architecture Library. Located at the UW School of Architecture in Cambridge Ontario, the Library gets its name on behalf of the Musagetes Fund — a fund created by local philanthropists Michael Barnstijn and Louise MacCallum. Containing over 30,000 volumes and 75 print and electronic journal subscriptions, the Musagetes Architecture Library also contains one of this country's top collections of rare books on architecture and design.
