Library Update - Fall 2005
University
- Bill Gates visited Waterloo on October 13, 2005
Gates singled out the number of interesting "R&D collaborations" Microsoft has with Waterloo, saying that they really stand out as a positive arrangement. As well, he noted that year in and year out Waterloo is the top pool for people and talent that Microsoft dips into.
- Annual report of performance indicators
Lead by Waterloo’s Dean of Engineering, Adel Sedra, the university released its first annual report of performance indicators which were carefully chosen to assess performance in several priority areas relevant to Waterloo’s mission: undergraduate studies, graduate studies, research, faculty, staff, co-operative education, resources, fundraising, and the library.
- Leadership changes
New Dean of Mathematics is Tom Coleman, previously director of a research centre at Cornell University.
Coleman takes over the deanship from Alan George, a former Provost of the University (1988-93). George continues in his role as Associate Provost (Information Systems and Technology) for a further two-year term and has just been appointed as Acting Vice-President, Research.
The new Dean of Applied Health Sciences is Roger Mannell who has been a faculty member in Recreation and Leisure Studies since 1979, and has served as chair of that department. He is president of the Academy of Leisure Sciences.
- Maclean’s ranking
The University retained its position as the #1 "Comprehensive University" in the country, and #1 "Best Overall" ranking by reputation in the nation in Maclean's magazine's annual universities issue. Waterloo also captured a number of other firsts.
Library
- Kresge Challenge
The Library was recently awarded a $750,000 CDN "Challenge Grant" from the Michigan-based Kresge Foundation toward the second phase of UW’s Next Generation Library renovations. The grant is made on a challenge basis to assist the Library in raising the balance required to complete the renovation projects.
- Sims Silent Study Galleria, Peter and Betty Sims Reading Room opening, October 24, 2005
Two recent gifts to the Library have transformed parts of the Dana Porter and Davis Centre Libraries. Funded by a $500,000 Campaign Waterloo leadership gift from community members, Peter and Betty Sims, the third floor of the Dana Porter Library now houses a periodical reading room, new computer workstations, and will soon have new study carrels. Additionally, a $150,000 donation from The Economical Insurance Group in honour of Peter Sims has helped rejuvenate one of the Davis Center Library's Silent Study areas with the provision of new carrels and chairs.
