- E-Initiatives
- Primo – The Library launched Primo to replace its TRELLIS catalogue as the primary search tool. Implementation was accomplished in collaboration with our TUG partners, Wilfrid Laurier University and University of Guelph.
- Improved Course Reserve Service – An improved Course Reserves Service was launched this fall using the e-Reserves software, Ares.
- Academic Integrity Website for Graduate Students - Waterloo released an Academic Integrity Website for Graduate Students. The website provides graduate students with guidance on crediting sources, collaborating with others, and avoiding cheating, fabrication, and the falsification of information. The initiative was led by librarians Christine Jewell, Leeanne Romane, and Jackie Stapleton.
- Special Collections Video — Special Collections created a new 5-minute tutorial Using Archives and Rare Books for Your Research to provide students with a concise introduction to conducting research in archives and special collections.
- Annie Bélanger — The Library welcomed Annie Bélanger to the position of Head of Information Services and Resources (ISR) in the Dana Porter Library. In this position, Annie provides leadership and direction for nine librarians and four associates within Porter ISR.
- Witer Learning Resource Centre (WLRC) — The WLRC opened its doors in June as part of the School of Optometry’s ribbon cutting ceremony for the School’s new addition. It is named in recognition of a $500,000 gift given by philanthropists Marta Witer and Ian Ihnatowycz to the School's expansion project.
- Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) — The GRCA donated its corporate archives from its first 75 years of operation to the Library’s Special Collections department. The GRCA manages the Grand River’s water and natural resources on behalf of 925,000 residents living in 38 municipalities. This is the first time the GRCA’s papers have been made publicly available to researchers and students.
- Library Day 2009 — The campus community celebrated Library Day on October 28. This annual event is the Library's opportunity to show appreciation to Waterloo students, faculty, and staff.
University
- Amit Chakma — The Waterloo community bid a fond farewell to Amit Chakma, Waterloo's Vice-President and Provost since 2001. Chakma has been appointed the 10th President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Western Ontario.
- Feridun Hamdullahpur —
Feridun Hamdullahpur was appointed as Waterloo's new Vice-President, Academic and Provost. Hamdullahpur arrived at Waterloo from Carleton University, where he served as Vice-President, Research and International, as well as Interim Vice-President, Academic and Provost.
- Mr. Prem Watsa, Chancellor — Mr. Prem Watsa, CEO of Fairfax Financial Holdings, was installed as Waterloo's ninth Chancellor. He succeeds Chancellor Emeritus, Mike Lazaridis, who completed a six-year term as Chancellor. Watsa gave his first campus address this past spring as the featured speaker at the Library's Friends of the Library Lecture.
- Sue Horton — Sue Horton was appointed as Waterloo's new Associate Provost, Graduate Studies. She succeeds Alan George, who served as Interim Dean of Graduate Studies since October 2007.
- Ian Wilson — Ian E. Wilson joined Waterloo to lead the development of Waterloo's new research facility in Stratford. Waterloo's Stratford Institute is an undertaking supported by the City of Stratford, the Ministry of Research and Innovation, Industry Canada and Open Text to specialize in digital media and global business.
- Waterloo's UAE Campus — Waterloo's United Arab Emirates campus opened with two initial programs in Chemical and Civil Engineering. Waterloo professors will teach the Waterloo curriculum in Dubai to provide the same quality of program content and instruction as offered in Canada.
- Campaign Waterloo — Campaign Waterloo has raised more than $515 million to nearly double its initial fundraising goal. During the campaign, Waterloo attracted four of the 10 largest gifts ever made to education in Canada.
- School of Environment, Enterprise and Development — The School of Environment, Enterprise and Development (SEED) launched within Waterloo's Faculty of Environment. SEED offers education, research and training in environmentally responsible business and development, and is said to be the first institution of its kind in North America and the most comprehensive in the world.
- Maclean's Ranking — Waterloo ranked first in three of the four reputation categories in the annual Maclean's rankings of Canadian universities. For the 18th year in a row, Waterloo ranked first in the "Most Innovative" category. It also ranked first in the categories of "Leaders of Tomorrow" and "Best Overall."
