What is Course Reserves?
The Course Reserves service works with instructors to make course readings available to students through library channels such as the Circulation Desk for paper material, or through the library website or UW-ACE for electronic material. This service is provided because the Library already owns and manages many of the desired materials.
Materials can be in paper or digital format. They could be your lecture notes or assignments, or they could be journal articles, books, or excerpts from other published sources. It is usually not possible to acquire permissions for other formats, such as audio and video files, if you do not already own the copyright.
Research has shown that most students prefer electronic reserves over paper reserves.
Electronic Reserves (eReserves)
- The Library creates "persistent urls" to full-text articles and ebooks already licensed (otherwise, urls copied directly from an address bar usually expire in a few hours),
- The Library obtains and pays for copyright permission to scan and mount materials that are not already available digitally, and does the scanning and mounting,
- There is an easy way to display materials through your UW-ACE course, in addition to the access through the library interfaces,
- Authentication issues are resolved so that materials are restricted to students in your class without requiring that students log on multiple times.
Paper Reserves
- Loan Periods for paper material are:
1 HOUR
3 HOURS
1 DAY - due by desk closing the following day
3 DAYS - due by desk closing on the fourth day
- Material with 1 DAY or 3 DAY loans may be placed on hold by students up to one week before the item is desired. These holds must be placed in person at the Circulation/Reserves desks.
- Hours of operation for the Circulation/Reserves desks are posted at: http://www.lib.uwaterloo.ca/hours/index.html
