Davis Centre Library basementThis is a picture of the basement in the Davis Centre library. Hailing from the faculty of engineering, I spent the most time in this library. While the library is a very peaceful place, the basement is especially so. There are many aisles of books to explore, and the hours can whittle away. It is a place to find solace, and to get things done :). — Mark Zammit

Davis Centre Library study carrelThis is a picture of a study carrel in the Davis Centre library. Hailing from the faculty of engineering, I spent the most time in this library. The old wooden study carrels are my favourite; they have both the warmth of natural wood, as well as the accumulated character of their many years of use. It is very relaxing, and I found the message on this carrel to be particularly poignant. — Mark Zammit

Dana Porter Library study carrelThis spot is a carrel on the south side of the 8th floor of the Dana Porter Library. Over the years since beginning my undergraduate degree, I have spent countless hours here. I like it because: it is near the Planning literature on this floor (I am in the Planning programme); it is often warmer on the south side of the building; the chair in this carrel is better than the ones around it. Most chairs in the Porter are upholstered in a slippery blue plastic material that causes me to slowly slide forward until my underwear uncomfortably rides up on me. My back also hurts after many hours sitting in these chairs because it is constantly under stress to keep me from sliding forward. The upholstery on the chair in this carrel is made from a non-slippery fabric and there are also armrests. My back is able to relax in this chair, I do not slide forward, my back does not hurt, and I have a more productive study session. — William Patch

Porter quotation wall In honour of libraries and UW's Loving to Learn day . . .

Folks, my favourite spot in the library is the quotation wall in the newly-renovated Dana Porter. A few months ago, while I was enjoying a coffee and waiting for a friend, I suddenly recognized one of the characters on the wall . . . in Chinese. Let me make it clear that my first language is English and I have (at best) a working knowledge of French and ASL. My knowledge of Chinese is limited to ordering dim sum and asking directions to the restroom. However, I know two special words, words my students helped me learn to write and "read:" Teacher, and Student. I would like to know what the quotation says in its entirety, but I think I know how it begins: Student. Like the tattoo on my left arm. arm body art

I make no secret of the fact that I have body art, but if you decide to use this story in some way, I'd prefer to remain anonymous today. I think there's some charm to leaving UW guessing: Which of your instructors has the word "Teacher" tattooed on one arm, and "Student" on the other? It's a statement on -- and commitment to -- learning that I'm sure many of my colleagues share.

greenhouse view from Porter My favorite spot in the library has to be on the side of the sugar cube (aka DP) that is facing the green house. The view is lovely no matter what the season is. If you are seated at a higher floor you can see all the tiny students rushing by; makes you feel very out of place. It is a wonderful view! — Bounmy Inthavong

Porter quiet studyMy favourite spot in the library is the silent study area on the 1st floor of Dana Porter. During my undergraduate years I spent many days studying there since I enjoyed the bright lighting, open concept tables, and comfortable chairs! Now that I am a graduate student I tend not to study at the library very often; however, I still appreciate being able to come to this location when I need a quiet and comfortable place to read. My photo submission is of my friend Lin browsing the collection of newspapers at this location. — Jonathan Aycan

view from PorterMy favorite spot is close to the windows near the top floors of Dana Porter Library. It allows my mind to wander and feel what it would be like to be a bird and observe such a beautiful view. — Eric Michell

quotation wallI love my photo.

Reason: my main point is the languages.

1. UW has multi-culture, language is the most important element in culture

2. UW is an university (I don't know other languages, but I know the Chinese sentence is exactly right for library)

— Hao Wu

Porter third floor...3rd floor of Dana Porter Library, because it's the best place to study for exams and the cafe downstairs is easily accessible. — Adora Min

Porter stairsI like stairs. Relatively speaking, They are rarely travelled and they offer good exercise. Furthermore, if one is so inclined to walk up to the tenth floor, they will be treated to a unique vantage point. (It should be noted that the photograph is not taken from the tenth floor but rather the ninth). If you peer down from the tenth floor you can see all the way down to the nether regions of the library. You can witness people scurrying about up and down the stairs, and you can even feel vibrations if you hang onto the railing. The tenth floor staircase is also often neglected as people rarely walk up that far. This relatively secluded spot in the Dana Porter library allows for privacy, reflection, and the oppurtunity to witness the hustle and bustle of people...and allows you to rest easy knowing that for the time being you're taking it easy. — Patrick Pinnell

Peter and Betty Sims reading roomMY FAVOURITE PLACE AT DANA PORTER!!!
Peter and Betty Sims’ reading room on the third floor of the Dana Porter library is my favourite place to study. It is a nice and quiet area where I get a lot of my reading done. Dana Porter is my favourite library because it provides students with great resources for those interested in arts, humanities, and social sciences. The silent reading room is also great because it provides students with computer workstations nearby, comfortable leather chairs, and the tables are spacious enough for me to pile on all of my books, assignments, and reading material. What is also great about Peter and Betty Sims’ reading room are the wonderful people associated with the establishment of this reading room. As respectable leaders, Peter and Betty Sims’, have provided students with a comfortable study area where students can peacefully study in silence. Their passion and commitment to education is greatly appreciated and their public service has benefited many people in the community and many proud students at the University of Waterloo. Peter and Betty Sims Reading RoomThe periodical reading room and computer workstations are convenient and great for enjoyment. With the FLEX lab, acquisitions and cataloguing department, and interlibrary loan services nearby, the Peter and Betty Sims’ reading room is most definitely my favourite place to study. With photocopiers, public printers, and public workstations close by, this location is both convenient and an excellent way for students to quickly use one of the computers to print off an article and then read it in a quiet environment. The atmosphere is pleasant, students enjoy studying in Peter and Betty Sims’s reading room as it instantly fills up, and it is a convenient place because if you need to place something on reserve, you can walk down the stairs or take the elevator to the second floor and place material on reserve or you can instantly get access to the circulation and information desk. Don’t forget, you can always grab a coffee on your way out after enjoying yet another great day studying at Peter and Betty Sims’ reading room at the Dana Porter library! — Magdelena Surma

Porter 10th floorI love the tenth floor because it makes me feel high.

philosophy shelvesI like philosophy shelves. Every time I’m there I find a new philosopher I did not know about. — Kamea Grandys
