DC Exam Study Zone

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Exam Study Zone?

The Exam Study Zone refers to the entire Davis Centre Library and a set of guidelines on noise, cell phone use, and food & drink being enforced there during the exam period.

Why did the Library create the Exam Study Zone?

The goal of the Exam Study Zone is to support students’ exam preparation by providing an environment that is pro-study and anti-disruption.

It was created in direct response to students’ many requests for reduced noise and increased quiet study space in Davis. Students have provided feedback to this effect through a previous Exam Study Zone, comments cards, discussion groups, and numerous surveys.

How long will the Exam Study Zone last?

The Exam Study Zone will last the duration of the extended hours period, from March 31 to April 25.

Could these changes become permanent?

Maybe. The DC Exam Study Zone is a pilot project created in response to students' consistent requests for a quieter and less disruptive study environment in DC. No decision on future implementation will be made until the success of this pilot is assessed.

What happens if I disregard the guidelines?

If you disregard the guidelines, you may be asked to leave the Library. If you are escorted out of the Library by police on more than one occasion, your library privileges will be suspended until the end of the term.

How can I report someone who is disregarding the guidelines?

Please contact a staff member to report individuals disregarding the DC Exam Study Zone guidelines. Staff are available at the Circulation and Information desks and may also be found monitoring the floor. You can identify staff on the floor by this badge, which they will be wearing for the duration of the DC Exam Study Zone:

Are groups still welcome to study in DC?

Yes. Groups are still welcome to study at the tables in DC, however, we ask that groups converse quietly during this period.

As before, groups may also book group study rooms in DC using our study room booking system.

Where can I go to study and talk louder with friends?

For lively group conversations, you can go to the Great Hall, Student Life Centre, POETS, Davis food court, Math 3rd floor lounges, etc. See the Group Study Spaces on Campus guide created by Library staff.

Why isn't hot food permitted?

Hot food (like pizza, french fries, etc.) tends to be more aromatic, messier, and therefore, more disruptive to other individuals studying in DC. Exceptions will not be made for food that has "cooled down" or is being saved as leftovers.

Will the Dana Porter Library and other locations be implementing something similar?

At present, only the Davis Centre Library is designated a quiet “Exam Study Zone” for extended hours period.

The noise issues at DC tend to exceed those at Porter and other locations, although we realize that noise is definitely a concern at all locations. If others are being disruptive, we encourage you to report this to a library staff member.

My library privileges have been suspended until the end of the term because I disregarded the guidelines. How can I appeal?

Appeals can be made in writing to or and will be considered on a case by case basis.

Are there power outlets on the lower level?

Yes, there are power outlets on the lower level. In addition to previously existing outlets, the Library has recently installed new power poles to accommodate a greater number of students.

Is there wireless on the lower level?

Yes, there is wireless on the lower level. Information Systems and Technology recently installed wireless boosters on both the lower level and the main floor to improve access for students.
