Creativity Unbound ... Pushing the Perimeter

During the past five years, Howard Burton has transformed the twin visions of a world-class research institute and national educational/outreach programs into a thriving reality. The result is Perimeter Institute — an independent, non-profit, resident-based organization dedicated to exploring foundational issues in theoretical physics at the very highest international standards while sharing the joy of scientific inquiry and discovery with students, teachers, and the general public via a full spectrum of enrichment programs that are delivered from coast to coast. As Executive Director, Burton directs all aspects of the Institute's research and outreach initiatives by working with the Institute's Board of Directors, Advisory Council, and the full-time research staff. He is also responsible for recruiting top researchers to participate in this cutting-edge think-tank.

Burton received a BSc in Physics and Philosophy, plus an MA in Philosophy from the University of Toronto. Following his studies at the University of Toronto, he received a PhD in Theoretical Physics from the University of Waterloo. Published in 1998, Howard Burton's PhD dissertation is entitled "On the Palatini Variation and Connection Theories of Gravity."

Burton writes a regular column in The Record and has initiated a myriad of programs. He is responsible for the Perimeter Institute's educational outreach program involving monthly public lectures attracting audiences of over 500 people. Attracting high school students worldwide, Burton has also initiated the Institute's International Summer School for Young Physicists. Other outreach contributions include the annual Einstein Plus National Teacher's Workshop and other teacher and student seminars held across Canada.

In addition to his scientific interests, Burton has a deep abiding passion for music, theatre, and literature.
