Transforming Technology: A Social Dilemma
a talk by Christine Cheng

From climate change to the provision of clean water, technology has often been put forth as the solution to many of the world's problems. The reality is that access to technology is unequal and that technological solutions may never reach the people who need them the most. In light of this dilemma, what is the role of scientists, engineers, and research institutions in ensuring that technology is developed and used in a socially responsible manner? The answer lies in assuming individual, institutional, and national responsibility—to recognize these inequalities and to take action against them.

Christine Cheng earned a University of Waterloo degree in systems design engineering in May 1999. The following year, she served as president of UW's Federation of Students. She was awarded the Nomura Fellowship, a full graduate scholarship at Princeton University where she has just completed her master's degree in public affairs focusing on international relations.

While at Princeton, Cheng was the co-editor of the Journal of Public and International Affairs. She also was awarded the Jay Bleiman Public Service Summer Internship Award. This award enabled her to work, in the summer of 2001, as an Intern at the United Nations Secretariat in New York.
