Richard Gwyn is one of Canada’s best-known and most highly-regarded political commentators. The author of several best-selling books and the recipient of national awards for newspaper and magazine writing, his articles are syndicated from coast to coast and he is a frequent commentator on TV and radio.
Gwyn has been a journalist since 1957 except for the years 1968-73 when he was executive assistant to Communications Minister Hon. Eric Kierans and subsequently a Director-General in that department. He has worked for many media organizations, from Time Canada to the CBC.
In 1973, Gwyn joined the Toronto Star as its Ottawa-based columnist. His thrice-weekly columns were syndicated in 26 newspapers. In a survey, his Parliamentary Press Gallery colleagues overwhelmingly judged Gwyn the single columnist they “all had to read.”
He comments regularly on international affairs for TV Ontario’s Studio Two and Diplomatic Immunity programs and is a frequent commentator on CBC. He retired from the Star in 2001 but continues to contribute two Home and Away columns a week.
Gwyn is the author of five highly-praised political books. These include a biography of Joseph R. Smallwood, the late premier of Newfoundland, titled The Unlikely Revolutionary (first published in 1968, re-issued with a new introduction in 1999) and a biography of the late prime minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau, The Northern Magus. His most recent book, Nationalism Without Walls: The Unbearable Lightness of Being Canadian, was published in 1995.
In 2002, Gwyn was appointed Chancellor of St. Jerome’s University at the University of Waterloo and an Officer of the Order of Canada.
