Scientific Explorations:
Follow the Chart or Random Walk?

a talk by John Hepburn

The University of Waterloo is proud to have been home to John Hepburn's scientific explorations for more than twenty years. From his days as a student (receiving his BSc in Chemistry in 1976) to his current tenure as Chair of UW's Chemistry department, John Hepburn has always shown himself to be an outstanding researcher. Not only has his work been published in over seventy scientific publications, but he has travelled the globe to present new work at conferences or address colleagues at research institutes and universities. One of his current projects is to spearhead work at the synthetic and biosynthetic research facility that received some $2.8 million in federal and provincial infrastructure grants.

Among the honours he has accumulated, John Hepburn can list a Canada Council Killam Research Fellowship (1995-1997), the Noranda Lecture Award of the Canadian Society of Chemistry (1993) and the Rutherford Medal in Physics of the Royal Society of Canada. He is an elected Fellow of the Chemical Institute of Canada and the American Physical Society.

Certainly, then, John Hepburn has fulfilled the promise he showed as a student, first here at UW, then at the University of Toronto where he earned his PhD in 1980 under John Polanyi. The university community is indeed fortunate to have him address its annual Friends of the Library Authors event.
