Out of the Shadow of Orthodoxy: Waterloo @ 50
a talk by Dr. Ken McLaughlin

Dr. Ken McLaughlin

Dr. McLaughlin is a Professor of History and Chair of the Department of History at St. Jerome's University in the University of Waterloo. Many would say that the UW is his second home. First arriving on campus in 1961, he was a member of the second Arts class at UW. Following graduate studies at Dalhousie and Toronto, he joined the History department at the University of Waterloo in 1970 and has served as Associate Chair, Director of the Tri-University Graduate Program, Director of the Public History Program, and Acting Chair of the department. Although his primary research was related to federal politics in the Macdonald-Laurier governments, his more recent research interests have been focused on the history of the University of Waterloo.

Recognized for his achievements with a myriad of awards, McLaughlin’s passion for local history can be seen in a number of publications. In addition to his new book, Out of the Shadow of Orthodoxy: Waterloo @ 50, he has released two other volumes connected to UW’s history in the past decade. In 1997 he produced Waterloo: The Unconventional Founding of an Unconventional University. This would be followed in 2002 by Enthusiasm for the Truth: An Illustrated History of Saint Jerome's University. He has also published histories of Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, and Hespeler, in addition to books focusing on the Germans in Canada, Mennonite Architecture, and a wide range of other community studies.

McLaughlin has been interested in the heritage movement and was Chair of the Foundation that established the Joseph Schneider Haus Museum in Kitchener. He has also served on the National Advisory Council on Museums in Canada and lives in a designated 1867 heritage landmark home in Waterloo.

Join us as we transform our libraries and meet the Kresge Challenge

Our goal is to create a Next Generation Library here at UW – a Library that inspires, informs, and educates. To assist us, we have received a Challenge Grant from the Kresge Foundation. If we are able to raise $2.8 million by June 1/07, then we will receive a grant of $750,000. We are very close! Please consider helping us meet the Challenge.
