On June 5, 2003, the Library hosted the official opening of the Schneider Family Papers at a special reception in the Doris Lewis Rare Book Room, Dana Porter Library.
The archival material on display at the opening ranged from an 1852 travel document belonging to one of the first Schneider relatives to come to Canada to an extensive series of photographs depicting both life in Kitchener in the last two centuries as well as family events.
Chronicling the life of the Schneider family from the arrival in Canada of the parents of company founder John Metz Schneider in the 19th century, the papers include documentation on the life of John Metz Schneider and his wife Helena (nee Ahrens) Schneider, together with succeeding generations including their son Norman C. Schneider who alongside Fred H. Schneider played a leadership role in company management and history.
The collection was donated by family members Herb and Betty Schneider, along with Fred and Jane Schneider, Betty Schneider-French, and Jean Hawkings.
Besides the archival collection, family members have also donated funds to assist in the preservation and conservation needs of the rare and fragile materials.

In presenting the gift, Herb Schneider comment on several factors prompting the family to both save their archives and choose UW as a suitable home. High among these factors was the "importance of saving the past."
