He is currently Chair of the department of Computer Science, a member of the Data Structuring Group, and Director of the UW Centre for the New Oxford English Dictionary and Text Research. His research interests span the fields of data structures and databases. He has been an active researcher in the area of data structuring, with applications to programming language design and databases. In recent years, he has been particularly interested in the design of text management systems suitable for maintaining large reference texts (including the Oxford English Dictionary) and large text collections. One project, in conjunction with the Canadian Strategic Software Consortium, aims to define a standard for integrating structured text access and management with relational database management systems.
