Tony Urquhart, from Niagara Falls, Ontario, studied at Yale Summer School in 1955 and Albright Art School, University of Buffalo from 1954 until 1958, when he was awarded a Bachelor of Fine Arts. He became the first artist-in-residence at the University of Western Ontario, where he was a professor during the years 1960 to 1972.

He currently is a professor of Fine Arts at the University of Waterloo, where he has been since 1972.

He is an acclaimed Canadian artist and was recently named to the Order of Canada. His work may be seen in numerous public collections including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the National Gallery of Canada, the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, England, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

A longtime friend of the UW Library, Urquhart began donating his artistic papers to the Special Collections Department in 1989. The Tony Urquhart Papers are particularly representative of his work as a painter, sculptor, and teacher of arts, as well as his parallel career as an activist for artists rights.
