Werther Vater Anthes!
Den segen Gottes Euch und Familie wünschen, hoffe ich daß diese Zeilen Euch nicht zu viel belästigen werden. Ich fühle etwas unruhig wegen dem Kinde welches ich versprochen hatte zu nehmen und auch weil ich beim ersten Schlittennweg im Sinn gehabt zu kommen um zu sehen wie ich mit der Mutter dasselben fertig würde [.] Es war mir Anfangs Winter nicht möglich, denn das _____1 überhäufte mich mit Arbeit, nun bin ich nächst drei Wochen hier und so ein wenig in Ordnung und konnte nun komen [.] aber da ich gehört das der Vater des Kindes noch lebt, auch daß die Mutter hat fervant2 komen wollen so habe ich gedenkt es sei besser erst geschrieben und dan weiß ich woran ich bin und Sie auch [.]

Esteemed Father Anthes
I send my wishes for God’s blessing on you and your family, and hope that these lines will not bother you too much. I feel quite concerned on account of the child which I had promised to take and also because I had it in mind to come with the first snow route to see how I might help with the child’s mother. This wasn’t possible for me at the beginning of winter because the _____3 overwhelmed me with work. Now that I have been here almost three weeks I’m somewhat organized and can come now. But because I heard that the father of the child is still alive, and also that the mother wanted to have relatives come, I thought it would be better to write first. Then I will know where I stand, and you as well.

Auch ist der Schnee gegenwärtig sehr tief, so daß sich Niemand erinnern kann daß er so tief je war und die Straßen sind kaum zu passiren wes halb ich mich jetzt nicht auf den Weg machen wurde. Ich hoffe nun und bitte Euch so bald wie möglich mit der Frau zu reden und zu fragen ob Ihr Mann auch Willens sei das Kind herzu geben und ob er das schreibens unterzeichnen würde. Wan ich versicher werden kann daß ich später keine Schwierigkeiten bekomme dann will ich es holen so geschwind der Weg es zuläßt. Es wird mir Niemand verdenken wenn ich mich versehe denn bei aller Vorsicht wird mann doch noch gebrannt. Nun bitte ich Euch noch die sally und Mutter Anthes so wie die andere Freunde zu grüßen und so bald wie möglich zu antworten wann Ihr nicht könt durch Br Neubach so addressiered [.]

The snow is still very deep at present, and nobody can remember it ever being this deep. The streets are barely passable, which is why I would not start on my way just now. I hope that you will please talk with the wife as soon as possible and ask whether her husband is also agreeable to turning the child over to me, and whether he would sign the document. If I can be assured that I won’t have any problems later on, then I will fetch the child as quickly as the road allows. I don’t think anybody will reproach me if I am making a mistake, for one can still get burned even when using the greatest care.
Now I ask you to send my best wishes to Sally and Mother Anthes as well as the other friends there, and to answer as soon as possible if you cannot address this through Brother Umbach.
