The Clement and Bowlby families of Kitchener, Ontario were connected both professionally and by marriage from the late 1900's on. These two families were influential in early legal, medical, financial and social circles of the area. The Bowlbys were a United Empire Loyalist Family in Norfolk, Brant and Waterloo Counties, having arrived in Annapolis County, N.S. from New Jersey in 1783 at the close of the Revolutionary War. Brothers Ward H. and David Sovereign Bowlby settled in Berlin [now Kitchener], the former in 1858 and the latter in 1853. Edwin Perry Clement, son of the Rev. Edwin and Mary C. Pope Clement of Simcoe, Norfolk County, was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1876 and was taken into partnership with Ward H. Bowlby, K.C., then county Crown Attorney for Waterloo County. In 1878 E.P. Clement married Jane E. Bowlby, eldest daughter of Dr. D.S. Bowlby.

Another family connection was the Jackson family: Dr. D.S. Bowlby's wife was Martha Esther Murphy. Her sister, Isabella Murphy had married Henry F.J. Jackson, railway magnate and grandfather of A.Y. Jackson of the Group of Seven school of Canadian painters.

The fonds consists primarily of genealogical, biographical and visual materials documenting the Bowlby and Clement families and contains correspondence, genealogical notes, clippings, diary fragments, manuscripts, music, photographs, and other material. This material was collected and preserved during the lifetime of Florence G. Clement, daughter of E.P. Clement, and was further arranged and added to by her niece Peg Forbes, daughter of William Pope Clement. The largest part of the fonds relates to the life and activities of local lawyer William Pope Clement and Florence Grace Clement, two of E.P. and Janie Clement's children. Of particular local interest is Janie Clement's reminiscences of the Berlin of her day, from the 1870's to the turn of the century. The fonds also contains material relating to the connection with A.Y. Jackson, Florence's cousin.
