This is a finding aid. It is a description of a collection of archival material held in the Special Collections department at the University of Waterloo Library. CAP Communications was formed in 1953 as Central Ontario Television Limited by Carl A. Pollock, Kitchener-Waterloo Broadcasting Limited, and Famous Players Canadian Corporation Limited. This group received a licence to operate a television station to serve central and western Ontario. The first signal from CKCO-TV was broadcast from Baden Hill (just west of Kitchener) on December 24, 1953. William D. McGregor was hired as operations manager and eventually became president the company and a vice-president of Electrohome.

In 1959, Pollock assumed the obligations of Kitchener-Waterloo Broadcasting Limited so that he and Famous Players each owned 50% of Central Ontario Television. During the 1960s, the company acquired two radio stations, CKKW-AM (December 1, 1963) and CFCA-FM (April 1, 1967), and moved into studios and offices at 864 King Street West in Kitchener.
Central Ontario Television Limited became a wholly owned subisiary of Electrohome when the company purchased all the shares in 1970. Over the next number of years, several rebroadcasting stations were opened: CKCO-TV-2 serving Georgan Bay (June 1, 1971), Channel 42 serving Lambton, Essex, and Kent counties (November 5, 1975), and Channel 11 serving Huntsville, Muskoka, Haliburton, and Parry Sound (February 25, 1976). On July 3, 1980, the company was renamed CAP Communications Limited in recognition of Carl A. Pollock.

In 1988, Electrohome purchased Sunwapta Broadcasting of Edmonton, Alberta, which owned CFRN-TV and two radio stations, CFRN-AM and CKXM-FM. This acquisition made Electrohome's broadcasting business the third-largest CTV network affiliate and the company's largest area of investment. However, changes in the Canadian broadcasting industry led to the sale of the four radio stations ca. 1992, and in 1997 the sale of the remaining broadcasting operations to Baton Broadcasting for a 22.8% equity interest in Baton.
