This is a finding aid. It is a description of a collection of archival material held in the Special Collections department at the University of Waterloo Library. Prepared by archival staff, finding aids provide a history of the person or organization that produced the collection, an overview of the collection, and a detailed list of the collection's contents. Finding aids are used by researchers to determine whether materials within a collection may be relevant to their research and to identify files that may hold items of interest. Series 44 : Operations : Wartime Production
Operations : wartime production. - 1942-1947. - 13.5 cm of textual records. - 189 photographs : b&w ; 26 x 21 cm or smaller. - 2 technical drawings : blueprint and blackline print ; 22 x 28 cm and 21 x 26 cm.
During World War II, Electrohome became a prime-contractor, sub-contractor, and general supplier as part of the war effort, and products from all three divisions were used by the armed services and the Red Cross. For the year ended April 30, 1944, 99.9% of Electrohome's production represented supplies for the war.
The Furniture and Woodworking Division discontinued all standard lines of furniture and in association with Fleet Aircraft Limited, manufactured wooden aircraft components including wings, fins, centre sections, stabilizers, and seats for the Cornell Trainer. The division also produced cases for mortar sights, artillery boards, and other items. The Appliance and Metal Products Division made various munitions components including shell exploders, brass magazines, fuse caps, and transmitter parts.
The Radio and Communications Division received contracts for communications equipment items that included headsets, aircraft intercom amplifiers, staff car radio sets, transceivers for lighthouses along the St. Lawrence, Red Cross radio sets, components for installation kits for the 19 wireless set, and other equipment. It also produced the 43 transmitter, originally designed at the National Research Council (Ottawa) but with the production design and engineering work completed by Electrohome engineers with the help of the Radio Production Alliance.
The Radio Production Alliance was formed by six radio manufacturers that decided to pool their engineering and manufacturing facilities for the war effort: Addison Industries, Limited (Toronto), Dominion Electrohome Industries Limited (Kitchener), Philco Corporation of Canada Limited (Toronto), Sparton of Canada Limited (London), Stewart-Warner-Alemite Corporation of Canada Limited (Belleville), and Stromberg-Carlson Telephone Manufacturing Company of Canada Limited (Toronto).
Contents: series consists of records relating to the involvement of Electrohome in the engineering and manufacture of products during WWII, including material relating to production councils from the company's three divisions (furniture and woodworking, radio and communications, and appliances and metal products), the Radio Production Alliance, the Canadian Aircraft Workers' Association, and contract renegotiation after the war.
