Sir Tyrone Guthrie (1900-1971) was born in Tunbridge Wells, Kent. At age 18 he received a history scholarship to St. John's College, Oxford. While at Oxford he began acting. He acted on stage in many different countries. He wrote a number of books on the theatre in addition to his autobiography.
