Annie Elizabeth Hewlett fonds. - 1911-1974, (predominant 1952-1955).

3 cm. of textual records (1 v.).

A.E.M. Brown was born in Sutton-on Hill, Yorkshire, England on Feb. 25, 1887. At the age of 12 she established a newspaper which continued to circulate in her district for years after she immigrated to Canada. She attended teacher's college in London and taught school prior to her sailing for Canada in the spring of 1911. During the summer of 1911 Mrs. Hewlett taught painting at Banff, and in December of that year she married Arthur Hewlett. Early in 1912 they moved to Cannington Manor in Saskatchewan. During the depression years she wrote a column, "Down on the Farm", for the Saskatchewan Farmer. Her essays and historical articles appeared in many newspapers and periodicals over the years, and at the age of 83 she published her first book, A Too Short Yesterday. Later, in 1972-73 a serial, "The Gate", appeared in the Western Producer. During the 1960's she did radio interviews on Cannington Manor for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Her water-colours were exhibited close to home at the Regina Public Library, and as far away as Laguna Beach, California. A.E.M. Hewlett was also the first president of the Saskatchewan Homemakers' Association for farm wives, and was a member of the Canadian Women's Press Club as well. She died 1974.

The fonds consists of a scrapbook of published articles about Western Canada written by A.E.M. Hewlett, as well as typescript excerpts of letters written to her mother.
