The original copy registers for Waterloo County (North and South) and Brant County have been moved to the Archives of Ontario. Contact the Archives of Ontario for further information.
Land registration records are a rich source of documentation for genealogists, historians, and others interested in heritage research and preservation. Ontario Land Registry copy books contain copies of deeds and other documents affecting title to land, such as mortgages, wills, quit claims, etc., from the time of the establishment of the registry system in 1797 until the system was changed in 1955.
Copy books are usually available on microfilm in local Registry Offices. The Archives of Ontario also holds microfilmed copies of land registration records. An inventory to these records is available for reference at the Archives of Ontario.
If you wish to examine Land Registry copy books consult the Abstract Index of Deeds at the local Registry Office or at the Archives of Ontario and locate the page for the piece of property which is of interest to you. Copy from this page the details relating to land transactions in which your subjects were involved. Details include: instrument numbers, type of document, date of registration, and names. This information is required in order to retrieve the appropriate copy book.
