MSDS Resources

CCOHS
Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) from manufacturers and suppliers. This is your best resource to start with.
MSDS FAQ

MSDS Search
To search by substance name, click on the purple "MSDS Search" button at the top and use the "Product Name" search box.

Vermont Safety Information Resources, Inc
Links to MSDS directly from the manufacturer when possible. Can be searched by compound name and CAS Number.

Chemical Reaction Risks

Bretherick's Handbook of Reactive Chemical Hazards (7th ed.; 2 vols.)
"It contains an assembly of all reported risks such as explosion, fire, toxic or high-energy events that result from chemical reactions gone astray, with extensive referencing to the primary literature."

Chemical & Engineering News: Safety Letters
People have written letters to the journal about safety issues that they have occurred in their labs; a list of the safety letters since 1993 is available. The Library also subscribes to Chemical & Engineering News.

Sax’s Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials (11th ed.)
Search by compound name or CAS Number ("Search In This Title" box). Also has index of compounds ("browse articles by title"). Provides toxicity and safety profiles.

Toxicity Data Resources

RTECS (Registry of Toxic Effects of Chemical Substances)
Six types of toxicity data are included in the file: 1. primary irritation; 2. mutagenic effects; 3. reproductive effects; 4. tumorigenic effects; 5. acute toxicity; and 6. other multiple dose toxicity. Specific numeric toxicity values such as LD50, LC50, TDLo, and TCLo are noted as well as species studied and route of administration used.

Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR)
Each toxicological profile characterizes the toxicologic and adverse health effects information for the hazardous substance (about 275 substances).

Dictionary of Substances and Their Effects Database
The DOSE database contains data on 4,123 chemicals which have been studied for environmental impact or toxicity. It is searchable by chemical name, formula, and keyword. Each entry includes information on chemical and physical properties, toxicity, environmental fate, legislation, etc.

Distributed Structure-Searchable Toxicity (DSSTox) Public Database Network
A public source of standardized high quality toxicity data- and it's structure searchable!

Hazardous Substances Databank (HSDB)
Comprehensive, peer-reviewed toxicology data for about 5,000 chemicals. Search by compound name and CAS Number.

IARC Monographs on the Evaluation of Carcinogenic Risks to Humans
This is a book series that is found in the Davis Centre Library. Click here for a list of titles in the series; do a search in Primo to find the call number.

Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS)
Hazard identification and dose-response assessments for over 500 chemicals. Search by compound name and CAS Number.

Regionally Based Assessment of Persistent Toxic Substances
"The collection, assembly and evaluation of data on sources, environmental levels, and impacts of persistent toxic substances across the globe".

Sax’s Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials (11th ed.)
Search by compound name or CAS Number ("Search In This Title" box). Also has index of compounds ("browse articles by title"). Provides toxicity and safety profiles.
