Annual Report 1993/94
ORGANIZATIONAL RENEWAL
Early in 1993, I struck a task group to review and promote the idea of the client-centred
library. Among the recommendations made by the committee were that we should:
- Prepare a vision/mission statement to inform and motivate staff
- Introduce a team-centred approach to problem-solving and performance enhancement
- Adopt performance measures and quality improvement
- Improve internal and external communications
- Provide an effective learning environment for staff and users
- Base the Library's structure on the integration of processes
The pursuit of these objectives has provided the primary focus for our program
of organizational renewal.
OUR VISION AND MISSION
A preliminary draft of a statement of vision and mission was distributed to, and
discussed with, all staff, and various suggestions were considered and incorporated.
After much discussion, rewriting and condensation, we now have a one-page document
that includes:
- A brief statement of the Library's role within the University
- A list of the values that determine our approach to the accomplishment of
our goals
- The Library's goals and responsibilities with respect to its staff and user
clients
- The processes by which those goals should be accomplished
The next step will be to encourage the staff of individual departments and
units to examine the document in the light of their specific accountabilities
to appreciate and achieve their goals of providing service to the academic community.
