Annual Report 1993/94
LIBRARY COLLECTIONS AND SPACE
JOURNAL USE STUDY
From January 1993 to April 1994, the Library conducted a study of the use of the
journal collections. The data from the study will be correlated with information
on subscription costs and availability through document delivery services to help
faculty and selectors in making decisions on cancelling and retaining journals.
A preliminary analysis of the results has shown that:
- Two-thirds of the journal use is accounted for by material acquired within
the last 5 years
- Items checked out of the Library amount to only 12% of all journal use,
i.e., the ratio of in-house use to borrowing is 7:1
- 20% of the journals to which we subscribe account for 80% of use
DEVELOPMENT AND NOTABLE GIFTS
The papers and private library of the architectural historian William Dendy (1948-1993)
is perhaps the most notable in kind donation received this year. The collection
includes over 3,500 books, some 38,000 slides taken by Dendy, and materials documenting
his original research. The collection represents virtually a complete document
of Canadian architecture.
Continued fundraising and public relations efforts including the May Friends
Lecture, joint ventures with faculty, and participation in the alumni appeal
have resulted in an increase in cash and in kind donations as well as a heightened
awareness of the Library.
SPACE
The Library's concern for continued effective use of library space for collections
and services required some minor but significant renovations and alterations:
- Commitment to in-house training called for the addition of another conference
room (formerly an office) and the installation of a cork wall to a large meeting
room
- In response to student need, the Library created a "Quiet Study" area in
the Davis Library
- Reference areas were redesigned and made larger to accommodate the additional
staff transferred to Information Services, and to provide them with flexibility
and ergonomic furniture
- A second Accessibility Centre was provided in the Davis Library with the
financial support of the Associate Provost for Student Affairs
- Projects were undertaken to relieve the overcrowding of collections in the
stacks in the Porter Library and the off-campus Storage Building.
