LIBRARY SERVICES

INFORMATION NEEDS

Information technology has changed significantly during the past ten years. Since it is important to know if the Library is meeting the research and information needs of the academic community, another task group has been created to plan and carry out a needs assessment project. The results of this survey will provide the Library with information to:

• Identify how the information needs of the various basic client groups that form the UW academic community have changed over the past decade
• Determine how UW Library can best meet their information needs at present
• Plan services and allocate resources in a period characterized by both fiscal restraint and major technological advances

DOCUMENT DELIVERY AND INTER-LIBRARY LOAN

Again, a task group was struck to make recommendations on the introduction of document delivery services and to explore the impact of such services on UW Library services and resources. The project involved:

• Gathering information on a variety of document delivery services via on-line literature searches and Internet newsgroups
• Consulting with staff at other university libraries that had established or were examining the possibility of establishing document delivery systems
• Preparing a short list of the systems that seemed to offer the best match to the services we were considering
• Recommending that we subscribe to CARL UnCover supplemented by the CISTI 2000 service

RESERVES

A proposal to consolidate and relocate the Library Reserve Reading units in the new extension to the Campus Centre has been accepted by the student building's management committee. The move has been undertaken with the objective of providing students with improved access to materials on reserve. The following services are being considered in conjunction with the new facility:

• Conventional reserves service
• On-demand publishing or the electronic distribution of documents via campus networks
• An "information kiosk" to provide information and assistance in the use of library and information materials on demand
