Tapping into Gaming Culture

Learning how to conduct effective research is not a game.  But could it be?  If asked, Librarian Christy Sich would answer “yes!”

Barbara, Yetian, ChristyChristy is currently working on a research project that investigates how librarians can use video games to teach research skills to students. As an avid gamer herself, Christy is also passionate about information literacy.  Now she’s designing an adventure and trivia game that teaches students information literacy skills in a fun and engaging way, by drawing on the competencies they already possess. She explains, “Librarians often believe that students have a hard time grasping information literacy concepts because they are faced with information overload. However, the gaming generation that we’re dealing with today is used to information overload and might be more apt to learn new concepts when it involves a participatory gaming environment.”

Collaborating with Christy on this project is Library Systems Analyst, Chris Gray, and Library Associate, Barbara Menich.
