Delving into Data

Dr. Ellsworth LeDrew knows his data.

The Geography and Environmental Management Professor has created a data management plan for his own research data and has been a driving force for data management and archiving for the International Polar Year (IPY), a collaboration of international scholars interested in polar research, as well as ArcticNet, a Network of Centres of Excellence of Canada.

Dr. LeDrew

“Scientists need a way to share data across institutions,” says LeDrew. “The IPY’s data management plan requires that data be made freely available and in the shortest time frame possible. This is what fosters innovation.”

In the fall of 2011, Dr. LeDrew worked with his Information Services and Science Manager Julie Friddell and librarians Jennifer Haas and Kathy Szigeti to assess Waterloo’s current data environment. They connected with researchers and other research-support offices and services from across campus to determine what data is currently being produced, what researchers’ data needs are, and where the opportunities lie for the Library in supporting data management and curation. Their efforts are guided by the Association of Research Libraries’ e-Science Institute, a program that aims to provide research libraries with an understanding of the data landscape and to help libraries plan strategically and support data activities now and into the future.
