Waterloo librarians Susan Mavor and Eva Dodsworth have both authored new books on topics that celebrate their respective passions for local history and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
Susan Mavor, Head of Special Collections, has written Westmount – The Tie that
Binds the Twin Cities: An Illustrated History of Westmount’s 100 Years. Westmount tells the story of one of the region’s most interesting and attractive residential
neighbourhoods from its origins in 1912 to the present day. Mavor’s “intoxicating and
consuming research journey” to write this book included serendipitous discoveries,
many conversations with current and former Westmount residents, and extensive use
of some of the Library’s own archival collections.
Eva Dodsworth, the Library’s Geospatial Data Services Librarian, is the author of
Getting Started with GIS: A LITA Guide, a how-to manual for librarians and others
interested in learning how to use GIS technologies. Her book introduces readers
to spatial literacy, online mapping programs, desktop GIS software programs,
and geospatial data. “This book has been in the works for a couple of years,” says
Dodsworth. “I teach several online GIS courses at universities in Canada and the United
States. Much of this material comes from those classes. It can be used as a training
manual for anyone interested in learning more about GIS.”
Both books are available for purchase at the University of Waterloo Bookstore.
