1. Approval of minutes
Minutes of the Annual Meeting of May 8, 2002 were accepted.
2. Annual Reports
a. President's report
Christine Jewell tabled the President's Report. Points highlighted in the report included LAUW's involvement in UL hiring procedures and the current negotiations for librarian representation by FAUW.
Some discussions ensued concerning the Graham Hill report. It was pointed out that though recommendations were made in this report, there are no formal requirements for the library to take action.
A motion was made for the new LAUW executive to establish a formal dialog with the new University Librarian concerning LAUW issues. This motion was moved by Helena Calogeridis, seconded by Erin Murphy and passed unanimously
b. Treasurer's report
Jackie Stapleton tabled the Treasurer's Report. Highlights included the move to the Waterloo County Education Credit Union, and the income and expenditures of the 2002/2003 year.
c. Program Committee's report
Jane Forgay tabled the Program Committee Report.
d. Compensation Committee's report
Shabiran Rahman tabled the Compensation Committee Report. Highlights included some slight upward change in Waterloo's ranking in the ARL salary survey results. It is anticipated that this may increase over the next year due to the promotion of approx. 15 librarians in 2002/2003 although there were some questions about the reasons behind the increase in UW's ranking. Overall, it looks like we are moving in the right direction.
The President's Report, the Treasurer's Report, the Program Committee Report and the Compensation Committee Report were accepted unanimously.
3. FAUW negotiations
Linda Teather provided an update on the negotiations with the University for representation by FAUW. Linda noted that the negotiation team has agreed all negotiations are confidential and she cannot indicate one way or the other if negotiations are going well or not.
The goal of the negotiating team is to bring librarians into the FAUW Memorandum of Agreement and for us to be represented by the Faculty Association. Negotiators for the University administration include Gary Waller (chief), Geoff McBoyle and Murray Shepherd. Negotiators for the librarians include Linda Teather, Anne Fullerton and Roydon Fraser (Mech, Eng).
There have been 3 negotiating sessions so far and more are to be scheduled. The librarians negotiating team is supported by both a background group consisting of FAUW representatives and librarians as well as a separate group of 10 librarians.
There has been no agreed upon deadline for the negotiations. There has been no discussion of changes in membership in the University's negotiating team at the present moment. It was mentioned that Murray Shepherd is due to retire this summer and both Geoff McBoyle and Gary Waller are taking sabbaticals this year.
If anyone would like to help contribute in the support of these negotiations, please contact Linda Teather or anyone on the LAUW executive.
4. Election of officers and chairs of standing committees for 2002/03
Jane Forgay tabled the Nominations committee report and named the individuals nominated for the positions of President, Treasurer, Secretary, Programs Committee Chair and Compensations Committee Chair. No additional nominations were forthcoming from the floor and the nominated individuals were acclaimed.
The LAUW Executive for 2003/2004 consists of:
President: Shabiran Rahman
Past President: Christine Jewell
