Indexes will help you find maps and reports covering a specific geographic area or topic. This publication lists indexes to reports and maps published by the United States Geological Survey and the U.S. state geological surveys or their equivalents. Many of the reports and maps referred to in these indexes can be found in the Davis Centre Library or the University Map and Design Library (UMD). To locate a specific report or map in the Library, do a title or author search in TRELLIS, the online catalogue. If you have any difficulty, please ask for assistance at the Information Desk.

United States Geological Survey

In this section, indexes that cover all areas of the United States, all topics, and all types of publications are listed first. These are followed by indexes that cover specific types of publications, and, finally, by indexes that cover individual states.

  1. United States. Geological Survey. Publications of the U.S. Geological Survey.
    Library has: 1879 to present.

    Title varies. These catalogues list reports and maps by series. Open-file reports were first included in the 1971-1981 volume. See 2 below for open-file reports published prior to 1971.

    Each volume includes an author index. Early volumes have separate subject and geographic indexes. Beginning with the 1971-1981 volume, and continuing through 1992, a rather complex subject index is provided. This subject index uses the same subject headings as were used in Bibliography and Index of Geology until 1993. For guidance in selecting appropriate subject headings, see the UW Library publication How To, No. 26: Beginners' Guide to the Bibliography and Index of Geology. Since 1993, a much-simplified, detailed subject index is used.

    This guide lists maps by series. Area, subject, coordinate, and author indexes are provided.
  4. List of Geological Survey Geologic and Water-Supply Reports and Maps for . . . .
    Library keeps latest edition only.
    Ref QE81 - QE182, QE349 Davis.
    For partial call numbers for individual states, see listing below.

    These catalogues list reports and maps relating to the geology, and the mineral and water resources of each state. Reports and maps are listed by series.

    Revised editions include an author index, and a subject index that uses the same subject headings as were used in the Bibliography and Index of Geology until 1993. For guidance in selecting appropriate subject headings, see the UW Library publication How To, No. 26: Beginners' Guide to the Bibliography and Index of Geology. Note that county names are used as Level 1 terms in these subject indexes.

    These indexes cover geological maps published by the United States Geological Survey, other U.S. federal agencies, state geological surveys, and other sources. Maps published separately and maps included in reports are covered.

    Each map index consists of a set of index maps that show the areas covered by geological maps and a bibliography that gives additional information about each map. Revised editions include a geographic map to help locate areas of interest.

The List of Geological Survey Geologic and Water-Supply Reports and Maps for . . . and the Geologic Map Index of . . . for individual states can be found in the Reference collection at the call numbers listed below. In a few cases these publications cover more than one state.

These indexes cover most of the reports published by the U.S. state geological surveys, or their equivalents, through 1980. All monographic publications issued in numbered series are included. For each state, reports are listed by series. Subject and author indexes are provided.

For some states, indexes to reports and maps published by the state geological survey or bibliographies on the geology of the state can be found in the Reference collection. For partial call numbers for individual states, see the listing above. In addition, the Earth Sciences Librarian maintains a collection of catalogues of publications of the state geological surveys. To locate an appropriate index or catalogue, please ask for assistance at the Information Desk.
