This guide presents a selection of major reference materials useful for anthropological research. Although sources in the University of Waterloo Dana Porter Library reference collection are emphasized, a selection of pertinent titles located in the Dana Porter Library government publications collection and the Davis Centre Library is included. Guides and Directories

American Anthropological Association. The AAA Guide, 1995/96.

Earlier editions kept in stacks and storage. Lists universities offering graduate programs in anthropology in Canada and the United States. Notes highest degree offered, special programs, etc. Includes "Index of Persons in Graduate Departments," lists Ph.D. degrees awarded annually, and lists dissertations and theses.

A list of basic reference and research sources in archaeology. Covers a variety of aspects such as fieldwork, analysis (ceramics, textiles and fabrics, dating methods, human skeletal and ecological, etc.), interpretation, and report writing.

In progress, to be completed in 20 volumes. Published to date are volumes on the History of Indian-White Relations, Arctic, Subarctic, California, Southwest I, Southwest II, Great Basin, Northeast, Northwest Coast and Languages. Authoritative and detailed articles on Indian groups followed by extensive bibliographies.

Library has: 1954 to present.

Abstracts and indexes over 2,000 journal articles, books, and dissertations. Organized by subject and arranged in four parts: article abstracts and citations; index to book reviews; books, articles, and dissertations; annual index. One subject area deals with Native peoples.

Anthropological Index to Current Periodicals in the Museum of Mankind Library (Incorporating the Former Royal Anthropological Institute Library).
Library has: 1963-1994.

Library has: 1970 to present.
Available on the Journal Indexes page.

Title varies. An index to periodical articles appearing in over 400 journals. Arranged by geographic region and then by subject: physical anthropology, archaeology, cultural anthropology, ethnology, linguistics. No index.

Anthropology Plus.
Library has: late nineteenth century to present.
Available via Journal Indexes page.

Anthropology Plus brings together Anthropological Literature from Harvard University and Anthropological Index, Royal Anthropological Institute from the UK. Provides indexing of journal articles, reports, commentaries, edited works, and obituaries. Database Sources: Tozzer Library, Harvard University; The Library of the British Museum Department of Ethnography ( Museum of Mankind), incorporating the former Royal Anthropological Institute library.

Arts & Humanities Citation Index.
Library has: 1975 to present
Included in Web of Science, available via the Journal Indexes page.

Contains references to articles in archaeology, folklore, and linguistics providing author, subject, and citation indexes.

Indexes journals of mainly Canadian Native content. Searchable by subject, author or keywords.

Historical Abstracts.
Library has: 1955 to present.
Available via the Journal Indexes page.

Title varies. Covers world's historical literature, English and non-English, from 1450 to the present. Excludes United States and Canadian history that is in America, History and Life. There are some topical sections, but it is mainly arranged by geographic area. Indexed by subject and author. English language abstracts.

Humanities Index.
Library has: 1974-1996.
Abs AI3.I62x Porter.

Supercedes in part: Social Sciences & Humanities Index (Ref AI3.I61 Porter 1965-1974). A good source for archaeology, area studies, and folklore. Includes author and subject indexes and book reviews.

Index Medicus indexes over 2,000 journals, some containing articles related to physical anthropology and primatology. Issued monthly, author and subject indexes are cumulated annually. PsycINFO
Library has: 1887 to the present. Available via the Journal Indexes page.

Provides citations, most with abstracts, to journal articles, dissertations, reports, English-language book chapters and books, and other scholarly documents in the field of psychology as well as citations relevant for medicine, education, social work, law, criminology and organizational behaviour. It covers literature from over 45 countries in more than 30 languages.

Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts
Library has: 1973 to the present. Available via the Journal Indexes page.

The database covers all aspects of the study of language including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics. Complete coverage is also given to various fields of linguistics including descriptive, historical, comparative, theoretical and geographical linguistics.

Social Sciences Citation Index.
Library has: 1956 to present
Included in Web of Science, available via the Journal Indexes page.

It indexes more than 1,725 journals spanning 50 disciplines including Anthropology, Linguistics, Social Issues, Sociologoy, and Women's Studies.

Wenger Anthropological Eskimo Database
Available from the Library's CD-ROM network.

Wenger is a database of literature written by explorers, missionaries, ethnographers, and others who were among the first Euroamericans to travel among and write about Inuit/Eskimo peoples. It includes out-of-print and hard to find material, basic works descriptive of each Inuit/Eskimo and Aleut group, drawings, photographs, and maps.

Special Collections - Government Publications

Reports issued by government departments, such as the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development or the Ontario Office of Native Affairs, debates of legislatures and committee proceedings, laws, regulations, court cases, treaties, and statistical information are included in the government publications collection (5th floor, Dana Porter Library).. Our collection contains materials from all levels of government from Canada, the United States, many other countries, and international or intergovernmental organizations such as the United Nations.

Use TRELLIS to locate government publications. For subject access, search only by keyword title or author (Boolean searching). Do not search using subject headings for government publications (government publications are catalogued without subject headings).
