Library Day is the our way of thanking students, faculty, and staff in the campus community for their continual support. It's is a time to celebrate your connection to the Library!
This year we're taking the opportunity to celebrate the Library's fantastic student workers on Library Day. Every term the Library employs up to 80 students whose hard work and valuable insights help to make the Library a better place for all students.
In honour of our student workers, the Library is hosting a thank-you lunch for our current student employees. While you won't be able to attend this event (unless you're a student worker yourself), here's your chance to meet some of our bright and talented student employees from past and present:
On an average day, you might find Edna Snyder shelving books in the Dana Porter Library. On an average night, you'd be better off checking the stage at a local concert venue.

Edna Snyder, lead singer of Kidstreet, with her bandmates and brothers, Cliff and Karl.
Edna, a Medieval Studies student, has worked on and off at the Dana Porter Library since 2008. Since about this time she's also been the lead singer in the the electronic trio Kidstreet, which is becoming increasingly recognized for its "badassly cute" tracks like Penny Candy and X.
When compared to the frantic pace of her music, Edna appreciates the contrast the Library can offer. "I love working at the library because it's such a calm, peaceful environment to walk into every day," she says. "Not to mention my coworkers and bosses are all fantastic people!"
Her favourite thing about working at the Library? "Rediscovering books or authors that I had once loved, but had forgotten existed... Ursula K Le Guin, or E. Nesbit"
Marie is one of the Library's most involved student employees. Below she describes her experience of working at the Library.

Marie Schega, Toronto Islands, Summer 2011
"Hi everyone, I'm Marie and currently in my 3b term, Liberal Arts, specialization History.
The first time I worked at DP was during my first (and only) Co-op term in 2009. In September 2010 I started working as a casual staff member in TUGbars and book return. When working TUGbars I'm responsible for pulling books that patrons from UW, Guelph University, and WLU request and make sure they get to the right destination. In book return, it's basically the exact opposite - I check in the books that patrons have returned and send them back to their respective libraries.
Though the work itself is not particularly challenging I love working at the library for various reasons. The main one would be my coworkers. I enjoy talking to other staff members and never had a boring conversation, especially because it's such a diverse group of people. Through meeting more and more coworkers I got the opportunity to help out with a library website redesign study and the Outreach Committee. I think it's great that the committee takes student feedback into account to improve the usability for all library system users. To me, it's a very inclusive, fun and laid-back environment. When I'm up in the stacks pulling books I get to listen to my ipod and even when it's a busy day the job is almost relaxing. Working at the library presents the perfect balance to the stressful homework-filled student life for me and I want to thank everyone at DP for making this such a great environment to work in."
