Times World Map and
Database Instruction Guide
Description:
The database is useful to create small scale political maps in colour, base maps, thematic maps, and comparative charts and tables. The text database provides descriptive information at the country level; statistical data can be charted or mapped. Maps and text can be printed and/or saved to a file for export to another program. The image information is current as of 1993.

To Start:
- Choose Electronic Atlases and press Enter. Choose Times World Map and Database and press Enter. This takes you to a window screen. (Do not need CD-ROM)
- Double-click on Times World Map icon.

Help:
To view help screen, use the Help menu under the main title bar. To change to screen pointer, use Shift + F1.
Searching Options
Scale:
1:64,000,000 to 4,000,000
- double-click on the selected area. The image will zoom out to cover the selected area. To zoom without changing the position of the centre of the area, click on one of the scales in the Nominal Scale list.
Types of feature:
- city/town, country, major lake, major river, mountain range, ocean, state/province and summit. To select a country, double-click on the country on the world map, then click on the box below Type of feature and select the feature type. For a single feature, e.g. Lake Huron, click on the box below index, the list of selected features will be provided.
Current time in any time zone:
- click on Database, then select Time Zone Clock. To return to normal selection cursor, either click on clock icon which is located on the left vertical Selection Bar, or click again on the Time Zone Clock.
Country information (text):
- description of history, politics, economics, demographics and health. Click on Database, then select Country Information, highlight description features. Click on Close when finished.
Other Features
Comparative sizes:e.g., biggest, longest and tallest features in the world.
- click on Database, then select Comparative Size. To select a feature type, such as rivers, mountains etc., except oceans, click on the feature card. To sort the entire grid according to any column, e.g. location, length, height, etc., click in that column and click on either the Ascending or Descending button. To view the single feature, highlight the row and click on Look at, or Pinpoint. Click on Close button, the feature will be shown on screen.
Shade countries by a statistical theme (world only), e.g. population, rail network, etc.
- click on Theme for Country Colours, then highlight selected value.
Contrast information between countries e.g. table and chart.
- select Country in Type of feature, double-click on the map to select the country. In order to select more than one country, hold Ctrl and click on each selected country. Click on Database, then select Table and Chart. Click on the column, then click on the box with Arrow down button to select the theme. Click on Close when finished.
Customize the appearance of the map
- click on Set, then select Palette. To change to another standard palette, click on one of the option buttons in the dialogue box. To adjust a colour, select Custom option and click on one of the small colour buttons.
Printing and Downloading:
- To print: click on File and select Print. The legend box and bitmap are not printed. If these are needed, Click on Edit and copy (Ctrl+C); then open another Window (Alt+Tab) and paste into another application, e.g. Paint Shop Pro. (in Software window).
- To Save: click on File and select Save As, enter filename with extension (.set). Insert a floppy disk in "a" drive. Select "a" drive in Drives at the bottom of the window and Enter.
To Exit:
- Click on File and select Exit.
- On program manger screen, click on File, and click on Exit Windows.
- Statement "This will end your windows session" appears on screen, click on OK. The screen will return to the main menu.
