Google Earth Level One: Exploration and Mapping

This introductory hands-on workshop offers an overview of the features available in Google Earth that can assist you with your academic research.  You will learn how to use the program to discover information and display your findings in a map format. 

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  • recognize and make use of GE’s built-in image features (Street View, 360cities, African Flyover)
  • add external map files in kml/kmz format
  • create a simple map (adding images, paths, text)

 

Google Earth Level Two: Creating KML

This advanced hands-on workshop focuses on the creation of KML files for dynamic content displays.  Participants will learn how to create vibrant placemarks and customized KML maps. 

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  • add html into placemarks
  • use ArcGIS to convert Shapefiles to KML
  • create your own custom KML files

 

Mapping Your Research and Survey Results

This workshop provides participants with a complete introduction to mapping the results of self-designed surveys.   Designed primarily for graduate students and faculty seeking to undertake geographic analysis of survey results.

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  • collect geographic address information from survey respondents
  • tabulate and format survey results for mapping purposes
  • geocode addresses and assign geographical locations to survey results
  • create maps using those results

 

Mapping Census Data

This hands-on workshop will teach beginners how to map multiple census themes using ArcGIS software.  Discover how displaying information in map form can result in interesting findings.     

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  • understand the themes and geography levels available for the 2006 Canadian Census Data
  • display Census data in ArcGIS
  • manipulate variables, and symbols to display information in a map format
