3D Building Height models can be created using DigitalGlobe's WorldView 1 50 cm satellite imagery. The building heights are +/- 10% of the true heights for 90% of the buildings.
In addition to building heights, some cities may also have clutter data and points of interest available. The clutter data is based on Digital Globe's WorldView 1 satellite imagery. resampled at 2.5 m resolution. The features in this set consist of street network (highways, main roads, other roads, streets, railways, airstrips, lakes and rivers).
The points of interest (place points) data are based on 1:25,000 topographic maps dating back to the 1970's and consist of 451 important landmarks, such as Airports, Banks, Cinemas, Hospitals, Museums, Restaurants, Wedding Halls, etc..
The Geospatial Centre has building height data for these cities:
| City and Date Created | |
|---|---|
| Galt (April 2006) | Montreal (May 2009) |
| Guelph (April 2006) | |
| Hamilton (Sept 2009) | Ottawa (Aug 2009) |
| London (April 2010) | Vancouver (Apr 2009) |
These data sets are available in UTM co-ordinates; horizontal datum is WGS84, NAD83. These data are stored as Esri shapefiles and raster format. Other data formats can be accommodated, as the Geospatial Centre has access to a number of conversion utilities.
In order to access these data sets, please visit the Geospatial Centre during reference hours, in EV1 , Room 246. Library reference staff are available to provide further information about these data sets and to deliver data upon request. Under the terms of the Library's license agreement, these data sets are for use by students, faculty, and staff at the University of Waterloo only.
There are public workstations in the Geospatial Centre that provide access to GIS software, program extensions and data manipulation utilities. Patrons may use the GIS software in the library to view and manipulate the data. UW faculty, students and staff may copy these data for use elsewhere.
These data may be exported from the GIS software as a bitmapped image (e.g., jpg) or may be printed as a map view using one of the library's colour printers.
