The 2004/05 academic year is proving to be a busy and productive time for the UW Library. Recent organizational changes have provided new roles for library staff members, including: Sharon Lamont, Director, Organizational Services; Shabiran Rahman, Department Head, Information Services and Resources (Dana Porter Library); and Mark Aaron Polger, Liaison Librarian for Psychology and Sociology.
As the Director of Organizational Services, Sharon Lamont is a member of the Library Executive Committee. She is responsible for the effective management, planning, and development for the following key areas: human resources, finances (operating budget), and physical resources.
Formerly the Head of the Library's Circulation Services Department, Sharon brings significant experience at many levels to her newly appointed position. A UW alumnus, completing an Honours BA in English in 1980, Sharon was initially hired by the Library as a casual staff member in 1976, before becoming a full-time staff member in 1985. Since then, Sharon has held several supervisory positions within the Circulation Services Department in both the Davis and Porter libraries.
Sharon participates in a variety of library and university committees. Her recent committee memberships include the Davis Library Planning and Renovation Teams, the UW Keystone Campaign Annual Event Working Group, and the UW United Way Campaign.
Sharon is currently completing a Master of Library and Information Science Degree at the University of Western Ontario.
As the Department Head for Information Services and Resources, Shabiran Rahman is responsible for the development and management of information services and resources in the Dana Porter Library. As a member of the Library Managers group, she works closely with the Library Executive Committee and other library managers to address library issues and resolve problems.
A member of the former Information Services and Resources Management Team, Shabiran possesses a variety of library-related work experience and skills that contribute to her new role as Department Head. Shabiran began her career in 1973 working in various jobs for the UW Library's Circulation Services Department while completing her MA in Sociology. In 1979, she left the UW community for a brief period to complete her Masters of Library Science degree at Indiana University, while gaining work experiences as a part-time Reference Librarian at Indiana/Purdue University and St. Francis College. Upon her return to the UW Library in 1984, Shabiran worked in various capacities for both the Circulation Services and Information Services and Resources departments, with her most recent role being the Liaison Librarian for Psychology, Sociology, and Electronic Data.
Some of Shabiran's recent professional activities include: Treasurer for the Canadian Association of Public Data Users, UW Women's Studies Board Delegate, Member Coordination Committee of the Southwestern Ontario Research Data Centre, and UW Shastri Advisory Committee.
