Dana Porter Library's Third Floor Renovations

Plans are currently underway for the renovation of the Dana Porter Library's third floor containing our collection of print periodicals. These renovations, scheduled to take place over the 2005 spring term, are funded by the recent $500,000 Campaign Waterloo leadership gift from local community members, Peter and Betty Sims. This gift will provide an innovative learning and research space.

The renovation plans for the third floor of Dana Porter Library include building an enclosed reading room housing a collection of current periodicals. This room will be enclosed using a series of paneling and glass, while presenting a front facade with wheelchair accessible doors. The reading room will be carpeted and contain 16 comfortable leather chairs, along with several small tables for using library materials. Sandra Keys, one of the UW librarians who is a part of the committee planning the third floor renovations states that the new reading room will be "a space that is inviting, warm, and quiet" for conducting reading, research, and study.

New Public Workstations

Additional renovations to the third floor include enhancing student and faculty research space by providing updated computer workstations outside of the new periodical reading room. There will be 12 new workstations providing access to the Library's electronic resources, TRELLIS, the Internet, and email. Each workstation will provide ergonomic seating, with two of the workstations allowing for table height adjustment. These workstations will be networked for public printing to a new printer located in the photocopier area.

What Does This Mean for the 2005 Spring Term?

When the third floor renovations commence in May 2005, public access to this floor will be unavailable due to safety issues. The third floor in the Dana Porter Library is schedule to re-open in time for the beginning of the fall 2005 term.

Material from Dana Porter's print periodical collection can be requested through the "request item from TRELLIS" article retrieval service called TUGdoc. This service will enable users to obtain photocopies of specific journal articles from journals available from the Dana Porter Library periodical collection. These article requests can be picked up at the Dana Porter Circulation Desk by 5 pm the following day, or shipped to another Library or office location within 3 business days. Additionally, special requests to view specific issues or volumes of journals can be made at the Dana Porter Circulation Desk.
