Library Staff Meet the Challenge

The Library was recently awarded a gift of $750,000 CDN for renovations from the Kresge Challenge Grant. This grant was made on a challenge basis: if the Library can raise the balance required to complete the renovation goal of $2.8 million by December 2006, then the grant funds from Kresge will be received. Staff at the Library were the first to meet the Challenge through their collective participation.

Following a meeting held in October to launch the Kresge Challenge, the collective response from library staff has been tremendous. In previous years, approximately 28% of Library staff contributed to library fundraising initiatives through the end-of-year Keystone Campaign. This year, Library staff members were placed on teams to encourage and increase participation. By the end of November, 92% of 129 staff members actively participated by making a gift to the Challenge.

Expanding the Challenge

Recently, the Keystone Campaign sent a postcard along with information about the Kresge Challenge to UW staff and faculty.

The Library and the Office of Development are also actively looking to external donors to help secure the Challenge Grant from the Kresge Foundation. A segment of the UW Alumni population were recently approached with a flash media presentation showcasing how the Library contributes to the vitality of its campus and people.
