Teamwork @ your library

If you have visited any of the UW Library locations over the past few years, you may have seen one of our three athlete-inspired posters and bookmarks.

These posters and bookmarks are part of a series created to make a connection with the UW community by combining research and study with physical activity. The development and design involved team collaboration between the Library’s Outreach Group, Graphics, and most importantly, active members of the UW student body.

Exercise Your Mind @ your library (2006)

image of poster: Excercise Your Mind @ your libraryThe current poster/bookmark combination for the Library’s athletic-inspired theme features fourth year Honours Science student, Krystal Benesch. Quite comfortable with having her photo taken, Krystal recently won the 2005 Miss Oktoberfest pageant and is the left winger for the Warriors women’s hockey team. At the photo shoot held in the Columbia Icefield’s Fitness Centre, Krystal was a good sport by posing while holding or balancing books and simultaneously using various pieces of exercise equipment.

Krystal felt honoured to represent the Library with the final installment of the poster series. "I love that exercise and academics have been emphasized in the poster - I hope that it will encourage students to get involved in physical activity, in addition to using the library for studying and its resources," states Krystal. "I personally think it is very important to include a combination of physical activity and academics into your schedule. Implementing daily physical activity not only keeps you fit, it also helps enhance learning by keeping you energized and alert."

Climb to the Top @ your library (2005)

image of poster: Climb to the Top @ your libraryThe second set of posters/boomarks involved using the campus recreation bouldering wall located in the Physical Activities Complex (PAC). Avid climber and UW alumnus, Ken Walton (B.Math ’05), struck an enthusiastic pose on the bouldering wall to best illustrate the "Climb to the Top" poster theme.

Ken, who plans to pursue graduate studies at UW, could usually be found studying at the Dana Porter and Davis Centre Libraries. "During my undergrad career I used the study carrels at the Porter Library for their quiet and solitude when I really needed to hit the books, while the large tables at the Davis Library were great for studying with friends. When available, the Library’s electronic reserves for math assignment solutions were extremely beneficial since I could access this information anywhere on or off campus."

Building Knowledge @ your library (2004)

image of poster: Building Knowledge @ your libraryThe first poster/bookmark in the series involved collaborating with UW’s award-winning varsity cheerleading team. Coached by Kevin Costen, the team won the silver medal at the 2003 Power Cheerleading Athletics competition. Photographed at PAC, the photo shoot proved to be tricky due to the complex pyramid formation the cheerleaders had to maintain to portray the "Building Knowledge" theme. The end result of this teamwork gave the Library an exciting poster and bookmark, recognition to the talents of the student cheerleaders, and a Photographers Association of America award to UW photographer, Chris Hughes.

UW alumnus Peter Lizak (B.Math ’01, M.Math ’04), a former member of the cheerleading team and frequent user of the Davis Centre Library, recalls the photo shoot for the poster being fun. "I think the poster series was very nice for both the Library and the teams involved by providing further exposure to both."
