The Library and Department of English will share access to a $100,000 endowment fund created by the Srivastava Family in honour of the late Gladys Srivastava — a proud UW alumna and former staff member.
In alternating years this endowment will fund an internship at the Library and a graduate scholarship for a student recipient in the Department of English.
The Gladys Srivastava Library Internship will help provide practical training for graduate students enrolled in Library and Information Science programs at Canadian universities. Funds from the endowment will be matched by the Library to create a four-month internship position on a bi-annual basis. The recipient of the internship will be involved in the digitization of several of the Library’s important collections housed in the Special Collection Department.
Gladys Srivastava spent a number of years at UW, both as a Masters of English student and as a Librarian and an Arts Co-op Coordinator. "Gladys Srivastava always brought a thoughtful, wide-ranging, cool, and unflappable intellect," states retired UW professor, Dr. Warren Ober. "She was invariably well-prepared, and her eclectic approach and outlook more than once opened new avenues and brought new perspectives to her fellow students — and to her professor."
Born in Scotland on April 4, 1934, Gladys MacLean Watt Srivastava created many ties while at the University of Waterloo. While at UW, Gladys received her M.A. in English in 1976, worked as a reference Librarian at the Dana Porter Library, then as an Arts Co-op Coordinator until the early 1980s. Gladys held several other careers in the fields of education and journalism, in addition to managing a number of riding schools and stables. She passed away in Aldergrove, B.C. on January 14, 2005.
Gladys is survived by her husband, Dr. Krishan D. (K.D.) Srivastava, a former professor and chairman of the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Waterloo. He is currently the Vice-President Emeritus for Student & Academic Services at UBC, in addition to acting as Provost & Senior Vice-President for the University of Trinidad & Tobago.
Gladys is also survived by her five children, two of which are UW alumni.
