Laura Howell |
Laura is the Library’s new Liaison Librarian for Physics and Mathematics. She arrives at UW after recently receiving her Master of Information Studies degree from the University of Toronto's iSchool, before which she completed her Honours Bachelor degree in Biological Sciences at the University of Guelph.
In this position, Laura provides support for her academic departments, engages in project and committee work, and provides research assistance at Davis' Information Desk. Laura brings with her a strong interest in emerging technologies, with particular interest in their application in creating online information literacy learning tools.
Apart from work, Laura enjoys biking, yoga, and reading books by her favourite environmentalists, including Jared Diamond and Tim Flannery. These days, she is also busy house-hunting and getting settled in the Waterloo area.

Since starting at the Library in 2001, Martha Lauzon has become a familiar face at both the Davis and Porter Libraries, having held various positions at each location.
While not exactly a “new” staff member, in mid-May Martha moved into a Library Associate position at Davis after spending a couple years in Porter's Circulation Department. In her new position, Martha provides research support for students at the Information Desk and also assists the Davis librarians with a wide variety of projects.
The move to Davis was a natural one for Martha, since this is where she first started in the Library. She describes the move "like coming home," a sentiment echoed by many of her colleagues who are happy to see her back.
Describing herself as an "amateur philologist," Martha is also a UW graduate, with a Bachelor of Mathematics degree majoring in Pure Math, minoring in Latin. Since graduating, she continues to take Latin and Ancient Greek classes in her spare time.
When not working or practicing her languages, she enjoys travelling, music, and "a certain tentative outdoorsiness."

Kathy MacDonald |
Kathy MacDonald started in mid-May as the Library's new Optometry Liaison Librarian. In this position, Kathy manages the Optometry Learning Resource Centre (ORLC) located within the School of Optometry and liaises with the School's faculty, students, and staff.
Kathy arrived at a busy time for the School of Optometry, with construction well underway for the School's building extension. Once completed, the Library will be moving into a larger space at the front of the building, so Kathy and ORLC staff have been busy preparing for the ORLC's expansion and move.
Before coming to UW, Kathy held positions at the Institute for Work & Health and the Alzheimer Knowledge Exchange. She also established a diverse educational background, earning two Bachelor degrees from the University of Guelph (BA & BSci), a Master of Library and Information Science degree from the University of Western Ontario, and a Massage Therapy Diploma from Sutherland-Chan School and Teaching Clinic.
Outside work, Kathy enjoys a wide variety of hobbies, including quilting, gardening, sewing, aquafit, and camping.
