Pauline Dewan
, Library Intern, Dana Porter Library

news @ your library: Welcome to the UW Library. You’ve been here a month now – any thoughts so far?

I am so impressed with everyone in the Library. People could not be more friendly or helpful. I just love working in such a hospitable atmosphere! I am also fortunate to be here at such an exciting time and can’t wait to work in the newly renovated main floor.

news @ your library: What interests you most about your position so far? Anything you’re looking forward to working on?

What I am really looking forward to is working on the desk, helping people find what they want. I have spent much of my life looking for information and knowing what it is like to feel frustrated in the attempt. I hope I can help others by sharing what I have learned about searching for information.

news @ your library: Can you tell us a bit about what you did before coming to UW?

After finishing graduate studies in English, I combined raising my children with writing. I became interested in children’s literature and wrote two books about the use of settings in children’s and young adult books. One has been published; the other one is almost finished. It is really fun to be back at university at the same time that my one son is at Laurier and the other is at Algonquin College.

news @ your library: In addition to your studies at FIMS, you also have a PhD in English from York University and a BA in English from McMaster University. What brought you to the library field?

I have always totally loved libraries. Librarians are so fortunate; they get to work with both people and books/electronic resources. This is a field where we can really make a difference in someone’s life by sharing what we know. I also really love the variety in this profession.

news @ your library: What do you think of Porter’s new main floor? Any favourite spots or features yet?

I just love it and can’t wait until it is ready to go! It is so open and airy with all those magnificent windows. What an inviting space for students!
