Over 250,000 E-books Added to Primo

Looking for e-books? The Library recently added over 250,000 e-books to Primo from HathiTrust, a digital library for American research libraries.

The addition instantaneously doubled the number of e-books the Library provides access to – we are now up to half of a million!

What types of e-books were added?

The e-books are public domain volumes that are now out of copyright. The digitized titles loaded come from the holdings of HathiTrust partner, University of Michigan.

What subjects are included?

Hundreds of subject areas are covered – including physics, speculative philosophy, literature, history, electrical engineering – just to name a small handful! The graph below illustrates the diverse subject coverage of the public domain e-books according to the Library of Congress Classification scheme:

Individual titles range from Sir Guy of Warwick to Jude the Obscure, from Mathematical Theories of Planetary Motions to Feudal Relations Between the Kings of England and Scotland Under the Early Plantagenets.

What is HathiTrust?

HathiTrust is a collaborative effort of American research libraries to archive and share their digitized collections. The HathiTrust collection currently contains over 5 million volumes, of which 750,000 are in the public domain.

What’s next for Primo?

The HathiTrust addition is just the beginning! Given Primo’s ability to add indexing for an unlimited number of repositories, Primo will continue to grow to include the indexing for other repositories of research interest.
