Steve arrived at the Library in the fall term after working as a GIS and Paper Data Librarian for Dundee Precious Metals, Inc., where he administered the corporate exploration information system and analysed GIS data for gold exploration projects.
Steve brings significant experience with GIS data mining, instruction, and project management to his new position at the Map Library. He is currently managing the Kitchener and Waterloo Historical street mapping project and will be working on a project to prepare teaching materials and demonstrations for upcoming advanced level GIS workshops.
When asked about his favourite GIS technology, Steve names Google Earth. “Google Earth is free and easy to use,” he explains. “I recently finished a presentation for Waterloo International, “Seeing International through Google Earth/Map.” It allows new UW international or exchange students to use Google Earth to virtually see the places of interest (church, clinic, hospitals, or governmental offices) in a new country from home.”
Steve graduated from the Faculty of Environment in 2005 with a Master of Environmental Studies degree, specialised in GIS. He received his bachelor degree in Geology from the Petroleum University of China.
Steve is enjoying his position so far. “The Map Library operates on people-oriented principles and it is rewarding whenever I can be of help to library users.”
Outside of work and GIS, Steve regularly enjoys biking, running, tennis, playing Wii, and spending time with his two girls.
