Out of Context: Subjective Realities Photographic Exhibition

"How do we perceive our surroundings?” “What do we really see?” Library staff members Gail Henry and John Hofstetter take up these questions in a new photo exhibit that infuses new meaning into the familiar.

Currently showing at the Odeon Gallery inside the Princess Twin Cinema in Uptown Waterloo, their exhibit Out of Context: Subjective Realities transforms the distinguishable world into the abstract.

In it, their photographs merge two seemingly opposites — flowers with ropes and rust — to create a harmonious unison between the natural and manufactured environment and an unexpected view of the familiar.

Gail and John met while working in the Davis Centre Library. Initially, neither one of them knew about the other's interest in photography.

“Oddly enough, I got the idea for the show after seeing some of Gail’s photographs posted on Facebook,” John explains. “Before then I had no idea she was a photographer, but I instantly recognized the similarities and complementary nature of our work.”

The exhibit opened earlier this month and runs until March 31. It has received exceptionally positive feedback so far, being described by one visitor as “an excellent counterpoint between two differing focuses on the small and unnoticed.”
